With a focus on sustainability we seek local and seasonal ingredients where possible. Getting to know our community and the people behind the goods we use is an essential part of our process .
MEet the local growers and farmers and learn about the journey of their produce from their paddock to your plate.
The ROMANO FAMILy - CAble bay, Nelson
Look out for the van with the open boot about 700m from the highway, as this is where you can find the Romano’s legendary Capri tomatoes.
Their story begins in the 1940’s when an Italian fisherman turned up with a handful of seeds from the Sorrento coast. For over 60 years, the Romano’s have been growing heritage Capri tomatoes, known to be some of the best in the region. We are so incredibly lucky to have access to their fantastic produce here in Cable Bay, where they grow their vegetables in a glasshouse. You can also find them at Nelson’s Farmer’s Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays), so go check them out!
Bruce & the happy chickens - CAble bay, Nelson
On the right hand side of Cable Bay Road, about 3 km from the highway, you can find a good old honesty box with the freshest eggs available. A couple of grazing horses in the paddock, an old fire truck and a bunch of healthy free-range chickens roaming on the hill. This is Bruce’s farm.
First come, first serve situation, so make sure to stop early to avoid missing out.
Ratabank Farm Fresh Milk - Glenduan, NeLson
Turn off the highway onto Glen Road and look out for the Fresh Milk sign. There, on the right, you will find a self-service vending machine with the freshest, creamiest milk you can find. Owned by Warwick and Alex, it only takes a minute to join the partnership. Fill up your milk bottles and taste the purity of locally produced farm milk.
Family-owned and operated for three generations, they provide A grade raw milk the way Mother Nature intended it. But be warned, once you try their triple cream, you won’t manage without it!
